After hovering inside the top five and swapping spots with a teammate several times, Gavan Boschele, has returned to the top spot in the SLMRankings.com Rolling Rankings, snapping a 17-week run by Casey Johnson. Boschele had a solid weekend at Cordele Motor Speedway with the ASA Southern Super Series, locking up a pair of top five finishes in the feature events.
Wisconsin’s Casey Johnson drops out of the top spot this week for the first time since May. After a sensational start to the year, Johnson has had some reliability issues over the past month and has seen his rating score suffer accordingly. Despite that, he remains just over a single rating point behind Boschele and could jump back to the top spot if he’s able to find his form again.
Remaining in third this week is Cole Butcher, who is expected to return to action at Toledo for the ASA STARS National Tour event next weekend. Butcher’s rating score places him just barely behind Johnson for second and within easy shouting distance of Boschele at the top should he continue his terrific season.
Another Wisconsin driver, Grant Griesbach, settles into the fourth spot this week, on the heels of clinching two track championships in the same week, just a week ago. Griesbach has not traditionally run a ton of the late-season special races, so his season is likely nearing a close, but if he continues to race (and it has been posted online that he plans to run at least part of the event at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway’s Oktoberfest), he could continue to move up.
Two more Wisconsin drivers, Chad Butz and Sawyer Effertz, sit fifth and sixth this week after being idle. The two drivers also competed primarily at Wisconsin International Raceway this season and have finished the schedule there. As the recency component of the ratings continues to eat away at their rating scores, Butz and Effertz are likely to drop, unless they return to the track this season.
Matthew Craig jumps one spot to the seventh position this week on the heels of two solid finishes at Cordele Motor Speedway. Craig came home second to Bubba Pollard on Friday night and followed that up with a seventh place run on Saturday. Craig’s schedule is likely to get busier over the coming weeks as the late-season specials begin to kick off around the southeast.
Minnesota’s Ty Fredrickson finds himself in the eighth position, despite taking the week off from racing. Fredrickson’s jump while idle underscores just how close the rankings are in the lower half of the top ten, with sixth and eleventh positions being separated by less than four points.
Rounding out the top ten are Andy Monday and Jordan Thiel. The two drivers have raced primarily at Wisconsin International Raceway this season, but may step out for some of the late-season specials around the upper Midwest. Each has run some other races this season when time has allowed.
